On Saturday Portsmouth had a charity event hosted by Ready To Rock School in aid of The Alzheimer’s Society. The show under the title of Rock Originals had four bands on the line-up tonight, each different but all of them featuring great rock music.

Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 2010, Los Angeles based band Love and a.38 have gained a steady following with their blend of huge riffs and gritty rock vocals. Melodic and dynamic with slight influences of alternative and southern sounds across their songs, it is fast paced full on rock.

London based band Cairo Son have certainly been making a name for themselves over the last few months. Featured on The New Rock Show on Planet Rock just over a month ago it gave music fans like me a chance to hear just how great this band sound. A rock band with huge heavy riffs, thumping bass and pounding drums behind melodic vocals made me instantly take notice of them.

Just over a month since the Dirty Thrills released their brilliant self-titled debut album, tonight they played a headline set at The Finsbury in North London. In an intimate setting which had a nice touch of tables and candles it was a great venue to witness the band play live.

Chichester based band Davy’s Gripp are a band that has a classic rock sound that is never going to sound dated. Formed in 2010 this five piece have gained a steady following with support slots for Toseland and The Virginmarys plus a headline slot at the historic 100 Club in London. With melodic rock songs that are just outstanding, all of the band each bring their unique talents that can be heard on all of their releases.

Shaman’s Harvest are one of those bands that you listen to and think when a band sounds this good why are they not so well known as their contemporaries as they should be. Formed in Missouri in 1996 and having now released 5 albums which have spawned singles that were featured on the Billboard Rock Charts, inclusions in film soundtracks and a theme song for WWE, this is a band that has delivered consistently great albums over that time.

With so much great music out there it is sometimes difficult to find every great band and much deserved bands don’t always get the recognition they should. This can be especially true for bands across the pond that don’t always get heard over here in the UK. So it was with great delight that I crossed paths with a band called Wicked Tongues who hail from San Diego, California.

James Toseland is world famous due to his career in World Superbikes and he has now turned his attention to another passion of his and that is music. Having already released his debut album Renegade with a number of singles getting considerable airplay, he has just embarked on a new UK tour with the opening night at The Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth.

When BlackWolf announced they were doing a small tour and Fire Red Empress were supporting them, I knew that I had to catch them on one of their dates around the country. Unable to make either Oxford or London this left just Bristol as the only chance to catch them live, even though it was the furthest away of all their dates in the south of the country. Being at The Exchange it also meant I didn’t have to find my way around much of Bristol, a city I haven’t visited for almost 30 years and even though it was a 250 mile trip, it was certainly worth it to see both bands play live.
