Houston based Lotus Effect formed in 2006, as an experimental progressive jam band before taking the direction of a mainstream heavy rock group, that also has a progressive/metal sound to them.
The band released their first EP ‘Rabbits & Royalty’ in 2010 and went on to win 2010 Houston Press Music Award for “Best Rock” and “Best Rock 2011” from Revolver Underground Radio. The band has also performed with an eclectic group of US bands such as Nico Vega, Semi Precious Weapons, Kings X and Katatonia.
Their latest full length album ‘Totality’ was released in October 2014. This 12 track album has a heavy rock sound but with an progressive influence that is heard throughout the entire album. However it isn’t just limited to those genres as each song changes direction, with undertones of metal and grunge thrown in for good measure, with a heavy rhythm throughout, and vocals that range from both spoken and melodic to those with a hardcore edge to them. Their latest release definitely has more than enough strong sounding tracks to make this an excellent album from Lotus Effect, with stand out tracks such as, ‘Totality’ ‘Saviour’ and the impressive heavy instrumental ‘Pumapunku’.
Lotus Effect describe themselves as for fans of System of a Down, Sevendust, Nothing More, Nonpoint, Incubus, Coheed & Cambria and Killswitch Engage, which is a very accurate description of them, as they have that certain sound to them that makes them contemporaries of those mentioned and are certainly a band to check out.
The band are also hoping to tour this summer in the US.
