Having seen Buffalo Summer in another support slot earlier in the year and playing a truly brilliant set then, they were a major influence in booking my run of gigs when then were announced as support for the Treatment, and looking at the crowd at the Underworld in London where I saw them play last night, I wasn’t the only one going by the amount of Buffalo Summer T-shirts on show.
Andrew Hunt (Vocals), Jonny Williams (Guitar), Darren King (Bass) and Gareth Hunt (Drums) walked onto the stage and immediately set about showing the crowd why this is one of the best live bands around at the moment. Full of blues infused rock with a set full of delicious rock vocals, melodic bass, mammoth sounding drums and hard hitting guitar riffs, Buffalo Summer played song after song of epic rock tunes.
Straight into ‘A Horse Called Freedom’ this hugely catchy song with its huge guitar riffs from the start set the tone, this southern infused song sounded classic yet totally fresh it instantly piqued the interest of those in the crowd who perhaps hadn’t seen this band before. ‘Ain’t No Other’ followed, an immense groove-led smooth sounding track, this was pure rock at its very best.
With a new album planned for release early next year the crowd were then treated to a new song ‘Money’. Sounding every bit as incredible as the songs from their previous album much loved by their fans, this was a monster of a track with gritty guitars, a thumping rhythm and gave a glimpse of just how brilliant their next album will be. Straight into ‘Rolls On Through’ the bass pounding through the floor this was a blues vibe at its best.
‘Heartbreakin’ another new song kept up the pace of this powerhouse of a band, showing that Buffalo Summer are the kings of massive guitars riffs behind a melodic and luscious vocal that becomes mesmerizing to watch. ‘Make You Mine’ showed no let-up in this set of addictive songs that were so damn catchy you were left with a sense of anticipation of just which next brilliant song would be next.
‘Down To The River’ is an enormous anthem of a song, this was more than just foot-tapping along to this one. The crowd accompanied this swagger of a rock song during the last chorus with hand-clapping making it one of their best songs on the night. Closing the set with ‘Into Your Head’ and a final chance to savour why Buffalo Summer are the band to see live, the huge sounding song ended an electrifying set and captivating performance from the band.
Buffalo Summer are a band that are everything that is great about rock music and their amazing set was no exception, this band is the future of classic rock.
